Ingredients
Scale
Vegetables
- 2 large carrots (julianned or shredded)
- 4 fresh garlic cloves (finely chopped)
- 1 tbsp freshly grated ginger or ginger paste
- 1 tsp crushed pepper flakes
- 1 large head cabbage (chopped)
Protein and Oils
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1 tbsp avocado oil (or tallow, ghee, or oil of your choice)
- 2–3 tbsps coconut aminos (or tamari, Braggs liquid aminos, or low-sodium soy sauce)
- 1 tbsp sesame oil (optional)
- Sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions
- Heat the oil: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and drizzle in your oil, preparing the base for stir frying.
- Cook aromatics and carrots: Add the carrots, garlic, ginger, and chili flakes to the skillet, then stir fry for 3-4 minutes until fragrant and slightly softened.
- Add cabbage and cook: Add the chopped cabbage and continue stir frying for 3-4 minutes until the cabbage starts to wilt but remains tender-crisp. Remove the veggies and set aside on a plate.
- Cook the ground beef: Reduce heat to medium, add the lean ground beef, mince it with your spatula, cook undisturbed for 3-4 minutes to develop a crust, then stir fry for another 2-3 minutes until fully cooked and crisped.
- Season the beef: Stir in the coconut aminos to the cooked beef, mixing well to distribute the flavors.
- Combine beef and vegetables: Return the cabbage and carrot mixture back to the skillet and combine everything thoroughly with the beef.
- Add finishing touches: Drizzle sesame oil over the stir fry and stir in sesame seeds if desired for added flavor and texture. Serve hot.
Notes
- Avocado oil can be substituted with tallow, ghee, or any neutral oil of choice.
- Use low-sodium soy sauce or tamari if you prefer a less salty version.
- Adjust crushed pepper flakes to your preferred heat level.
- For a gluten-free option, ensure that coconut aminos or soy sauce used is certified gluten-free.
- Sesame oil and seeds are optional but add a nice nutty finish to the dish.
- This recipe works well with ground turkey or chicken as alternative proteins.
- Serve with cauliflower rice or over steamed brown rice for a complete meal.
