Description

A delicious recipe for Grilled Italian Sausage and Peppers featuring juicy sausage links grilled to perfection with charred bell peppers and onions, topped with marinara sauce and melted mozzarella cheese served on your favorite buns.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage and Veggies

  • 4 mild or spicy Italian sausages
  • 1 red bell pepper thinly sliced
  • 1 yellow bell pepper thinly sliced
  • 1 yellow onion thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt & ground black pepper to season

Toppings

  • ½ cup marinara sauce or your favorite store-bought sauce
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 4 buns or rolls of choice
  • Fresh basil for garnish if desired

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill: Preheat your grill to medium heat to prepare for cooking the sausages and vegetables.
  2. Prepare the veggies: In a medium bowl, toss the sliced red and yellow bell peppers and yellow onion with olive oil, ½ teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon ground black pepper. Set aside to marinate briefly.
  3. Grill the sausages: Place the Italian sausages directly on the grill grates and cook for 7 minutes on one side, then flip and cook another 7 minutes or until fully cooked through. Remove from grill and cover loosely with foil to keep warm.
  4. Grill the veggies: While sausages cook, place the seasoned peppers and onions in a grill basket. Grill over medium heat for 10 minutes, tossing frequently, until softened and nicely charred.
  5. Assemble the sandwiches: Place one sausage in each bun or roll. Top each with the grilled peppers and onions, drizzle 2 tablespoons marinara sauce evenly over each, and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.
  6. Melt the cheese: Place the assembled sandwiches on the grill over indirect medium-high heat or under a broiler for 1-2 minutes until the cheese melts.
  7. Garnish and serve: Add fresh basil on top if desired and serve the sandwiches warm for a satisfying meal.

Notes

  • Use spicy Italian sausages for extra heat or mild if preferred.
  • If you don’t have a grill basket, you can use a grilling tray or foil packet for the veggies.
  • Substitute mozzarella with provolone or parmesan cheese if desired.
  • Keep sausages warm on the grill rack over indirect heat to maintain their juiciness.
  • For a low carb option, serve without buns or use lettuce wraps.
  • If broiling cheese, watch carefully to avoid burning.
