Scale
Base
- 1 sleeve saltine crackers (about 40–45 crackers)
Caramel Sauce
- 1 cup unsalted butter (about 2 sticks)
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
Toppings
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup red and green M&M’s or your favorite holiday sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a 13×9 inch (33×23 cm) baking pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
- Arrange Crackers: Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared pan, breaking a few if necessary to fit evenly.
- Make Caramel Sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter and brown sugar together, stirring constantly until the mixture boils. Reduce heat slightly and simmer for 4 minutes without stirring until thickened and caramel-like.
- Coat Crackers: Carefully pour the caramel sauce evenly over the saltine crackers and spread with a spatula as needed.
- Bake: Bake the coated crackers in the preheated oven for 7 minutes or until the caramel is bubbling and slightly darkened.
- Add Chocolate: Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips over the hot caramel-covered crackers. Let sit for a few minutes to soften.
- Spread Chocolate: Use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate evenly over the crackers.
- Add Toppings: If desired, sprinkle red and green M&M’s or holiday sprinkles over the warm chocolate layer.
- Cool and Set: Allow the pan to cool at room temperature for 15 minutes, then refrigerate for at least 1 hour until the chocolate is firm.
- Serve: Use the parchment or foil overhang to lift the Christmas crack out of the pan, place on a cutting board, and break into bite-sized pieces.
Notes
- Customize the toppings with your favorite holiday candies or sprinkles to add a personal festive touch.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or the refrigerator for up to one week.
- Use parchment paper or foil with an overhang in the pan to easily lift out the Christmas crack for serving.
